This Mistake Costs Thousands

If your PTO won’t engage in winter, you’re not alone. Cold weather is one of the most common causes of downtime for concrete pump operators across Canada and the northern U.S. When temperatures drop, small maintenance issues quickly turn into jobsite delays.

At Concord Concrete Pumps, we see this problem every year and in most cases, it’s completely preventable.

Why a PTO Won’t Engage in Winter

Your Power Take-Off (PTO) system relies on air pressure to engage properly. During winter, moisture inside the air system can freeze and block the small air lines that activate the PTO cylinder.

When this happens, your PTO won’t engage in winter conditions, even though everything may seem fine mechanically.

The Main Cause: Water in Air Tanks

Air tanks naturally collect condensation. If they are not drained regularly, the following chain reaction happens:

  • Water builds up
  • Moisture travels into air lines
  • Temperatures drop
  • Lines freeze
  • PTO won’t engage

No PTO means no pumping  and that means lost time on site.

Signs Your PTO Is Freezing

If your PTO won’t engage in winter, look for these warning signs:

  1. PTO switch activates but nothing happens
  2. Delayed or weak engagement
  3. Inconsistent shifting
  4. Air pressure irregularities

If the issue only appears during cold weather, frozen air lines are the most likely cause.

How to Prevent PTO Problems in Winter

1. Drain Air Tanks Daily

Drain your air tanks every night. This is the simplest and most effective way to prevent your PTO from freezing.

2. Inspect Air Lines

Check 1/8” lines, fittings, and hoses for cracks, leaks, or brittleness.

3. Maintain the Air Dryer

An air dryer significantly reduces moisture buildup  especially in colder climates.

4. Check Electrical Connections

Ensure solenoids and wiring are clean, tight, and corrosion-free.

5. Warm Up the Truck

If possible, park indoors and allow the truck to properly warm up before engaging the PTO.

The Cost of Ignoring It

  • Missed concrete pours
  • Emergency service calls
  • Damaged PTO components
  • Expensive downtime

When a PTO won’t engage in winter and the issue is ignored, it can lead to:

And downtime is the most expensive repair of all.

The service team at Concord Concrete Pumps can help diagnose and fix the issue before your next pour.
